Central America Region Summary
The entry of Pan-American Life into Costa Rica is a natural step that supports the geographic development and the strategic plan of the company in Latin America. In the Central American region, also comprised by Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, Pan-American Life is the main provider of individual and group life and health insurance. Pan-American Life was the first company in the region to offer individual life insurance, both in the local currency as well as in American dollars.
The story of Pan-American Life in Central America dates back to 1914 when the company established a general agency in Guatemala to operate in the country and the rest of the region.
Since then, our general agency initiated activities in Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador. Towards the middle of the century, all the Central American countries started to implement insurance laws and Pan-American Life adapted to these changes while modifying their operations according to the requirements of each country. In all of these countries, the general agencies developed into branches or subsidiaries becoming what now are the companies that we operate in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and newly established, Costa Rica since ratification of the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA.)
Among their achievements, Compañía de Seguros Panamericana, S.A., Pan-American Life Honduras and Pan-American Life El Salvador have excelled for being among the most financially solid insurance companies of the region and for their leadership in the individual insurance field, as well as for being among the first companies to offer individual and group health insurance.
