Join PALIG in applauding Hispanics!
"The increase of Hispanic residents in the United States
represents a re-emergence as the dominant minority after more than 400 years
since the English colonists arrived in Jamestown, Virginia." The New York Times,
1994.
This article was published 14 years ago in The New York
Times. It was 1994, a year of economic crisis and dollar devaluation for Mexico,
the signing of the NAFTA Treaty, the Soccer World Cup was held in the U. S. for
the first time, and Hispanics represented 10 % of the American population.
Fourteen years later, there are 44 million Hispanics in the U.S., they represent
15% of the population and are undoubtedly, a vital economic force.
The economic power of Hispanics has never been more relevant
and attractive for the American public. Before, it represented the cultural
richness and its allegory. Today, it is the dollar sign pasted on the forehead
of this niche, with $870 billion dollars supporting the buying power of
Hispanics. Ignoring this population segment would represent a catastrophic
mistake. In cultural terms, there has never been so much richness and diversity;
in economic terms, the figure had never been so surprisingly high and worthy of
admiration. Hundreds of years ago, the United States was founded by European
immigrants who were able to build a solid, honorable and free country. Today,
waves of immigrants, this time of Hispanic origin, are contributing to what
similar immigrants started many generations ago.
Yesterday, we applauded those European immigrants for
their character and determination. Today, we ask that we all salute Hispanics
for their determination and courage which has secured them a special role in the
United States.
During this Hispanic Heritage Month, the Pan-American Life
family takes off its hat, stands up, and publicly recognizes those men and women
who are fighters, and who turn adversity into opportunity; the dreamers that
create and accomplish; the idealists and believers that determine their success;
and for all of you Hispanics, us Hispanics that value life and enjoy it.
Thanks for the learning and the example that you provide.
Your success is our success. Thanks for your determination and for the energy to
continue fighting in order to bring you the best service. And finally, thanks
for your great dedication. All of these constitute the virtues needed by us to
protect your families.
We applaud you, Hispanics, during your month; September,
Hispanic Heritage month!
